Though it has a few issues, this is one of the better kits I’ve used. It offers an impressive variety of supplies for the price, and is the perfect size to take along on an outing in case you see something you’d like to sketch. The only major issue I had with it is the utterly ungodly smell.I don’t usually have any problems at all with smells, but this was pungent. It smells like hot batteries and immediately stunk up half of my mother’s house. I took it back to my house last night and it was so strong that I actually felt a bit nauseous, so I put it outside. The smell has dissipated a bit today, but it’s still nasty. It’s too bad because this is a darn good little kit.This kit is on the affordable side, so I was willing to cut the supplies in it a little slack. The pencil barrels are made from cheaper wood that doesn’t sharpen well and likes to split. The lead type is stamped on each pencil, but they were placed in the case in no particular order, so I had to rearrange them all myself. It’s not a big deal, but it might really confuse a beginner. They were also badly sharpened, so I took a few minutes to make them even.Though the pencil wood was disappointing, the leads were some of the best I’ve tried. They were all smooth without a scratchy one in the bunch, and I really appreciated that they included a wide range of leads (from 5H to 8B). I tested them against my favourite set (from Dollarama, oddly enough) and I think they were better in many ways. Please see photos for comparison.In addition to the pencils, you also get six charcoal pencils (2 each of soft, medium and hard), a graphite stick, a gel pen, three tortillons, a pencil extender, two erasers a paintbrush and twelve watercolour pencils. I was quite impressed by the charcoal and watercolour pencils. While not the best I’ve used, they were much better quality than I expected at this price. The sketch pads were also a pleasant surprise. Though the paper is thin, it’s decent quality and you get two full 50 sheet pads to work with.Pros:-Excellent value-Very good quality and variety of supplies for the price-Suitable for a beginner, intermediate, or even experienced artist-Two 50 sheet 5.75 x 8” sketch pads included-Case is well-made and can be taken along on virtually any outingCons:-Utterly horrific smell-Pencil barrels made from cheap wood, hard to sharpen-Pencils not arranged in order-Pencils not sharpened properly-Pencil extender had some sharp edges I had to removeThe last art kit I tested from Amazon cost over $10 more than this and didn’t offer anywhere near the quality or variety this set provides. At just $19.99 (after the $2 coupon), I’m extremely impressed by this product and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it…except for the horrible smell. It’s so bad that I’m going to deduct 1.5 stars. Aside from that, it’s a fabulous value for a beginner, intermediate or even seasoned artist.My rating: 3.5 stars
